Hi Chris, welcome! We’re hereto chat about your second book in the Knights of Time series, Journey in Time,a sci-fi romance…and we get to hear all about your story-stars. Before we startwith the questions *smile*, here’s a bit about Chris:

Chris Karlsen is a retired police detective who spenttwenty-five years in law enforcement with two different agencies. Herfather was a history professor and her mother an avid reader. She grew up witha love of history and books.

She has always loved traveling and has traveled extensivelythroughout Europe, the Near East (especially Turkey and the Greek Islands), theCaribbean, and North Africa.

Born and raised in Chicago, Chris has also livedin Paris, Los Angeles, and currently resides in the Pacific Northwest with herhusband and four rescue dogs.

Okay,Chris…you ready? Let’s get crackin’….

KDR~Please tell us how the idea came to you for Journey in Time, book 2 in your “Knightsin Time,” series. Please include all the fun details.

CK ~ The hero, Alex Lancaster, in Journey in Time, wasthe best friend of the hero in my first book, Heroes Live Forever. He playeda very active role in that story and I really enjoyed writing him. Not tomention that early on, he started nagging me to give him a story of his own.

Whenthe time came to write Alex’s story it didn’t take long for me to figure outwhat I wanted to do to him and with him. Time-travel fascinates me, always has.Alex was once part of the medieval world, a baron known as Guy Guiscard. Itseemed natural to take him from this very comfortable modern world he now livesin and send him back. Then I complicated his life more by sending the heroine,Shakira, back with him.

KDR~Sounds like a most compelling time travel treasure, Chris, with a yummy heroand heroine.

What’s Alex’s job? What does he do for a living?

CK ~ He’s a record producer. Shakira is anattorney who represents him in a lawsuit.

KDR~Wow, lots of tension in that relationship. *smile*

Give us some insight into ShakiraConstantine. What’s a bit of her back story?

CW ~ She studied hard atCambridge to graduate top of her class in law school. The firm she works for inLondon is one of the oldest and most respected firms there. It’s also a very straight-lacedoffice and the partners would disapprove of her playing in a weekend rock bandso she keeps that part of her life secret. She’s considered a “high-flyer” atthe firm with the potential to make junior partner quickly. This is herambition. When Alex becomes her client, she’s forced to decline his offers ofdating. It’s a major turnaround for her when she finally accepts an invitationto visit his country cottage.

Oneof her strong character traits is her intelligence and candid voicing of heropinions and beliefs. This presents a problem for her during her time inmedieval England. Fortunately, she’s also resourceful and quick thinking.

KDR~Who is Shakira to Alex? Can you give us abit about the first time they met each other?

CW ~ They meet at acharity ball in London. They aren’t formally introduced. Alex notices thisrather exotic and lovely woman who’s attending the ball alone. He asks her todance and she agrees. He’s a well known music producer so she knows who he is.She also saw him sitting with a lovely blonde. They dance to “UnchainedMelody,” (a song that’s a favorite of mine.) As the song finishes, he bends andkisses her. He also expects to talk and dance with her more, which is why heenjoyed simply dancing with her and not chatting her up during the song. Whenhe lifts his head after the kiss, Shakira sees the blonde approaching, shetells him, “Don’t get yourself in trouble, Mr. Lancaster. She steps away fromAlex and disappears into the crowd.

KDR~Oh, goodness…Chris, you leave us hanging here. LOL

Okay…so moving on ~ Can youtell us about the abilities of Alex Lancaster? How do they help OR hinder?

CW ~ Alex has been given asecond chance at life. The life he leads in this time is that second chance.How this came about is explained in the story. The life he had before was as amedieval man, a baron who he knows will die at the Battle of Poitiers. When heand Shakira are transported back, they find themselves in the year 1355.England is preparing for war. The army will sail to France in four months. Ifhe and Shakira can’t find a way to the 21^st century, he’ll sail withthe army to certain death.

Hisknowledge of the past and the future is a ticking clock for the couple. Theimportance of the limited time they have creates actions and reactions thatresult in terrible consequences.

KDR~So many twists and turns, with a mere ripple effect. Fascinating.

Why this location? Anything inparticular in real-life that made you select it?

CW ~ I’ve been to Englandmany times and fell in love with the beautiful countryside and the history.London is such a remarkable city. Gloucestershire is stunning. The landscape iseverything you imagine England to look like. It reminds me of the shire in Lordof the Rings. I knew years ago that if I ever wrote a novel at least onecharacter would live there.

KDR~Journeyin Time, is included in your Knightsin Time series, can you give us titles and a tagline for other books in thisseries?

CW ~ Yes, it’s part of my“Knights in Time,” series. The tagline for Journey in Time, is: Right woman…right man…Trapped in the wrongplace and wrong time. Book 1 of theseries is, Heroes Live Forever. Thetagline for that is: Great love cantranscend anything, even death and time. I’m working on the first draft ofbook 3, Knight Blindness. I haven’t a tagline yet.

KDR ~ Which scene was yourfavorite to write? Can you share a little of it?

CW ~ I have two scenesthat go hand-in-hand and I like to count as one favorite scene. It’s where Alexand Shakira first go back in time and is transported to medieval England. Alexis aware of what’s happened but hasn’t had the opportunity to talk to Shakiraand tell her what he knows.

Theyride into what was in the 14^th century, Baron Guiscard’s castle. *AsI said in an earlier answer, Guy Guiscard is who Alex used to be. Shakirathinks the location is part of a movie set and is looking for the modernequipment that would be on a set. She can’t figure out why she can’t findanything a production crew would use. But mentally commends the set designerfor the effort at authenticity.

Ashort time after arriving, Alex takes to a bedchamber in the castle, sits herdown and tells her everything. The truth about his past, where they are, theyear and what’s in store if they can’t find a way back to this century. I had a great time putting myself in herplace. She goes from thinking he’s playing a bad joke, to thinking he’s crazyand she really doesn’t want to be falling for a lunatic. When the reality sinks in, she freaks out. Itwas a fun scene to write because I got to go through all of those emotions withher.

KDR~It sounds like a challenging scene as well and one I look forward to reading.

Please share anything else aboutthis story you’d like ~ maybe a difficult scene or character ~ someone orsomething not cooperating…

CW ~ I find writing sexscenes difficult. Every one I’ve ever done took me ages to get through. You’dthink they’d be easy for a romance writer, but not for me. I want them to besensuous. I struggle in coming up with just the right environment regardingwhat they’re hearing, tasting, feeling, seeing, while not distracting from thelove making. I always breathe a sigh of relief when I finish one of thosescenes.

KDR ~ What are you working onnow?

CW ~ I’m working on book 3of my Knights in Time series. It’s called Knight Blindness. It’s also a timetravel. One of the knights from Journey in Time is the hero. I’mbringing him forward in time to the present day. The writing is going slowerthan I anticipated but I want and need to address all the little details andthings in this world that would either horrify and/or delight a medieval man.

KDR~ Please tell us how the idea came to you for Cornerstone Deep Echoes. Please include all the fun details.

CAW ~ Since CD Echoes is the second book in the Chronicles of Shilo Manor series, thecore of story came from book one, CornerstoneDeep. And that book was originally ashort story I wrote for a prompt based contest on an online writing community,Writing.com. I’ll admit this to you, KayDee… I cheated a bit. I already had it written down as a memory ofa dream I had. Shh. Don’t tell. *wink*

KDR~ Secret’s safe with me. Go On…

CAW ~ I had great feedbackon that short story and so many people said it should be turned into a novelthat I started looking at the possibilities. Once I started, there was no turning back. The characters grabbed me and came tolife. They showed me where they lived,how they interacted with each other, who they loved and why. Personalities started showing more vividlyalong with differences, to the point it became evident these people came fromseparate worlds—some more advanced than others. The story encompassed so much that I realized this was not going to justbe a novel. It would have to be aseries. CD Echoes is a continuation of the Shilos’ story…as will be CD Destiny.

KDR~ What drives Cole, motivates, and/or inspires him?

CAW ~ In a single word,Mianna. Cole has never been able to letMianna go after her death nearly four hundred years ago. All that time they believed reincarnationdidn’t exist on Cornerstone Deep. And hefound his soul mate in her. So when thetruth comes out and he finds her reborn in Anna, there’s nothing he won’t do toget her back…and keep her.

KDR~ Can you give a little more about Mianna andCole? Maybe a bit about the first time they met each other?

CAW ~ Actually, Cole andMianna met long before this story came about. Cole and his family were on holiday to the Northern Provence. They were guests of one of High Priests ofthe Arylin colony there. It’s thelargest community of Goddess of Love worshipers on Terra. Cole, James and Vincent were about to leaveto go skiing Higgotham Mountain with the man’s older sons when his daughterentered the room. As soon as their eyesmet, Cole knew Mianna was his soul mate. Her soul called to him, spoke to his when no other woman’s had. Needless to say, he didn’t accompany the menon that ski trip.

But all these years later, after centuries of griefand loneliness, longing for his eternal love to return but believing herrebirth would never come, a woman’s soul spoke. And it couldn’t have come at a worse time. That moment catapulted a series of eventsthat became the first books in the Chroniclesof Shilo Manor series.

KDR~ Can you tell us about the Shilos’ abilities? How do they help OR hinder?

CAW ~ Cole is a Sentinelfrom a gifted dimension, Meridian. Likeothers from his plane, he has powers. It’s the oldest realm in the Arched Spectrum of Realms and theinhabitants have progressed far beyond any of the other planes. While these abilities are common to them,it’s like magic to those of Cornerstone Deep. So, Cole, James and Vincent are known as wizards.

Cole’s talents lie in telepathy andenchantments. James is a master atmanipulating the elements. He cancontrol multiple tasks with great accuracy. Vincent is very powerful when it comes to commanding energy. That’s a nice way of saying he blows thingsup. LOL. And sometimes his temper gets the better of him. He keeps James busy cleaning up after him.

Their talents definitely help. Cole relies heavily on his ability to reademotions and share his thoughts. But itmakes it hard for him to deal with situations at times. For example, in Cornerstone Deep, theemotions emitting from everyone in the room as they tried to unbind Anna’s soulwould have made it impossible for him to carry out his role in theprocedure. He was very thankful forJames’s potion that allowed him to only have to deal with his own feelings.

James turned to Cole and handed him a small vial.“Put that on your tongue. It will help you cope without the added emotions ofothers.”

Cole quickly emptied the bottle, ensuring not adrop was lost. As if bathed in paraffin, hot wax coated his mouth, reachingdeep into his throat and lungs. All anxiety in the room disappeared and he tooka deep breath, looking back at his love…

… Linda set a hand on her cheek to pull her to faceher. “Anna, you want to remember your parents, don’t you? You used to be one ofthe most sought after artisans in the city. My father owes you much more thanhe pays you.”

Elaina laughed, but it came out like a nervoussqueak.

Anna slowly nodded as she gazed into her friend’seyes.

Cole watched the compassionate conversation, gladhe couldn’t pick up on Anna’s true feelings. The potion however, couldn’tsilence the soft words she spoke as she looked back at him. “But—will I stilllove you?”

Then, in Cornerstone Deep Echoes, when they learnedwho Lord Dressen really is…

As the final picture showed and blinked, signifyingthe completed essence trace, Vincent doubled over as if punched in the stomach.James braced himself with his fists on the desk and Cole stood froze, the finalname repeating in his mind. “Kyle Dressen, 1959-.” (Wouldn’t want to spoil it for you)! *wink*

KDR ~ So not nice Charlene!!

CAW ~ His brothers’ emotions hit him with force. He sethis hands at his waist and walked a small circle to expel the added anxiety. Itdidn’t work.

KDR~ Is Cornerstone Deep Echoes includedin a series? If so, what series and can you give us titles and a tagline forother books in this series?

CAW ~ Yes, it’s book two inthe Chronicles of Shilo Manorseries. Book one is Cornerstone Deep.

KDR~ Tell us about Cornerstone Deep. Does it have a hierarchy or some othercode/laws of their kind? If so, can you give us a few of their rules?

CAW ~ Cornerstone Deep is actually the nameof the position in the spectrum. Thefamiliar name of this dimension is Terra. Terra mirrors Earth in many ways: progression, appearance,aggression… But it is a bit differentwhen it comes to their hierarchy. ShiloCity is the capitol of the entire realm. The rulers are called Grand Marshals. They do have a voting system, but it’s reserved for the elite.

Also, religion plays a large part in how manynoblemen cast their votes. And with theShilos being Sentinels appointed by the Gods, it’s hard to rally any support togo against them. Not that there was everany reason to stand against them anyway, but in Cornerstone Deep, Lord Kyle Dressen, Senior Grand Marshal ofthe courts, decides to do just that.

KDR~ Which scene was your favorite to write? Can you share a little of it?

CAW ~ Cole would probablyhate me for drawing attention to it, but I think it would be the scene whereCole runs into his last girlfriend. Forthose who’ve read, you’ll remember Charlotte from the first chapter. She’s completely in love with Cole. And he loves her more than any other womanhe’d dated in decades. But, of course,he’s looking for so much more than that. He’s looking for that connection he once had with Mianna. His soul won’t let him settle for anythingless.

In this scene, Cole is ring shopping for Miannawith Vincent. And who does he run intobut…you guessed it. Charlotte along withher jabbery daughter.

Pedestrians dodged Cole as he stepped from Arbede’sFine Jewels onto the busy city center boulevard. He clutched the littlegift box for safe keeping and turned as children ran around him with gigglesand squeals. Despite the disturbance, his heart soared and he looked to thepale blue sky. The yellow sun sent warmth to kiss his face and he couldn’t holdback the curve to his lips.

Vincent stepped from the shop and smiled. “Ihave to admit big brother, you couldn’t have chosen a better ring. Mianna’sgoing to love it.”

His heart beat with excitement. He’d nevershared his enthusiasm of marriage with his youngest brother and though he wasreluctant to do so this time, Vincent proved to be a genuine help. “For a kid,you do have good taste when it comes to women’s jewelry.”

He chuckled. “I’ve had some practice.”Passers-by bumped him again and he cast an irritated gaze their way. “Is itjust me, or is it more crowded than usual?”

As Cole glanced around, a sudden flush drainedhis face. What were the odds? Here? Now? He turned back to Vincent with aclenched jaw. “Let’s get out of here. Quickly.”

“No argument from me.”

A cheery voice rang through the throng. “Tom?”

Cole winced. With reluctance, he turned to seethe dark head of curls bounce his way in youthful exuberance.

The young woman bound up to him, her brown eyessparkling. She threw a bag-filled hand onto his arm. “Imagine running into youdown here.” She glanced over her shoulder then stretched her gaze to look pastthe crowd. “Mother will be thrilled.”

Cole ran a hand down his chest, trying to erasethe instant discomfort. He managed a smile. “Amy.”

“Oh, she’ll be along.” Returning her attention,she nodded to her load. “I’m getting something special for a friend. She’s theone that was all over the front page of the social column with Lord Dressen.”She nodded and her curls wiggled around her shoulders. “Yeah, I know her. Hername’s Anna Sinclair. And he’s been after her for ages. Can you believeit? A Grand Marshal choosing someone from a lower class?” She scrunched hershoulders and squealed. “I told her she needed to listen to him and just say‘yes’, and it looks like she finally did.” She smiled a dramatic sigh. “Whosays dreams don’t come true?”

“Indeed.”

“Oh, I have to show you.” She rummaged throughthe packages on her arm. “I looked all over but couldn’t find one like he gaveher—not that I could really afford one just like, of course—but I tried andended up having to buy two sets to get even close to the same scent.”

She pulled out a black candle. “This one islicorice.” She peeked up at him and continued to reach within the bag. “I know,weird, huh. And this…one is…vanilla.” They teetered with her hands as shescooted the bag handles into a more comfortable position.

“The last day she was at work, he brought herone that smelled like both together. She loved it! She left it burning all daywhile she worked on his privacy screens.” A quirk spread her lips. “Out of allthat jewelry and stuff he gave her, a candle finally did the trick.”

Cole straightened as Amy’s free-spirited speechoffered more information than he desired.

A woman’s hand lighted on her arm. “Amy, didyou find what you were looking for?”

“Oh, Mom. Look who I ran into.”

Unease rushed him and Cole unconsciously took afew steps back.

The woman’s waves fell off her shoulder as sheleaned around her daughter to get a better look. Her brown eyes widened againsther heart-shaped face and her thick lips parted. “Tom?” Dodging her daughter,she rushed to him and threw her arms around his neck. “Oh! I’ve been soworried. I’ve looked all over for you.”

Vincent stepped into Cole’s view and folded hisarms, cocking his brow. Cole cleared his throat as he answered the quizzicalstare with thought’s voice. “It’s Charlotte.”

His brother set his chiseled jaw and leaned hishead to the side. Drawing a heavy breath, he turned his back on the two.

Cole set his hands on Charlotte’s waist andinched back. “Forgive me.” His eyes flitted to the store they’d just left.“I’ve had business.”

Too late, he realized his mistake. She hadfollowed his gaze.

Blinking back to him, her caramel complexionblushed. “Oh. Of course.” An anxious breath passed her lips and she barelyretained a giggle. “I was just worried that… I mean, after what you said theother night… And it’s been a few weeks…” She waved a flighty hand. “And then Icouldn’t find your number. I swear it was in my purse. But, then it wasn’t.”

She threw her arms around him again. “Oh, Tom.I love you so much. I thought I’d lost you. But, of course, you’re always sobusy. I should have realized.”

Cole forced a breath past his anxiety. “Yes.And I’m afraid I must rush off now.”

“Okay.” She released him but framed his facewith her hands. “Call me,” she whispered before pressing her lips to his.“Mmm.”

He sent an anxious plea to his floutingbrother. “A little help would be appreciated here, Kid.”

Vincent glanced over his shoulder and clearedhis throat. “Excuse me, Tom. But, this was to be a quick trip.”

Cole squared his shoulders and stepped back.“I’m sorry, Sh’létte, but I must be going.”

Her lashes batted as she looked into his eyesand her emotions grazed his heart. His stomach tugged at his throat. Suchopenness. Such deep feelings that flowed so freely. The very reason he couldn’tcompletely sever the relationship. And he couldn’t bring himself to correct thesituation now. Not here.

He averted his gaze and turned, walking away.

Vincent fell into step beside him. “You didn’teven have the decency to break it off with her? You just left, taking yournumber with you?”

A scowl tightened Cole’s features. The lastthing he needed was Kid’s ill-tempered opinion on the matter. Pedestriansrushed pass, several breaking through the space between them. Cole sent hisdisgruntlement to the crowd.

Vincent grabbed his arm and pulled him to hisside. “And what’s with this Tom thing? What did you plan on doing if youactually found a woman you wanted to spend the rest of her life with?” He heldup a hand. “Oh, wait. That’s right. You never planned on spending more than afew months with any one of them.”

“That’s enough, Kid.”

Cole turned down a nearby alley, heading intothe depths with long strides. Vincent followed with a huff. “You know, for awhile there I forgot what a selfish prick you were.”

He didn’t bother speaking his retort andallowed his telepathic gift to punch his thought deep into Vincent’s mind. “AndI forgot what an irritating runt you were.”

Vincent growled and shot his fist toward him. Apulse bolted from his knuckles, sending a flash of blue neon to highlight theneglected back street. With a wave of his hand, Cole dispersed his elements,leaving the charge to strike the dumpster behind him. Discard littered the airwith a fowl stench as the iron container rammed against the brick wall, gnarledby the blow.

Biting back the urge to rebuke, Cole darted tothe sky and seclusion of the towers. Whatever his situation with Charlotte was,it was between them. Not a kid.

KDR~ Please share anything else about this story you’d like ~ maybe a difficultscene or character ~ someone or something not cooperating…

CAW ~ There was one scenein particular that caused me more trouble than the rest. LOL. Both characters were being difficult to workwith and details just weren’t coming. Itwas the one where Cole faces Lord Dressen.

It takes place at Shilo Park where hordes offaithful are gathered to witness the absence of Griffin, God of Conformance’sstatue. They’re panicked at the “suddenstorm” that overtook the heavens. Vincentwas barely maintaining his promised “let Cole handle it” position and Dressenis…well, being Dressen.

The conversation just wouldn’t flow. I don’t know how many little notes I had topiece together to get it right. And thefight took far too much effort to get out. The noblemen are protected from magic through an ancient covenant. So, I had to make sure any magic Cole usedwouldn’t be a direct attack. He’d haveto use the elements against him in one way or the other.

KDR~ What are you working on now?

CAW ~ I’m working on aseries called Aumelan. I have revisions to do on it and hope to havethings ready to submit by the end of the year. It’s the story of Chad, a Tsosey Master who’s sweet on his server, Dee. His heart feels at home with her even thoughhe has a girlfriend—his childhood sweetheart. He dreams of what might be if the only thing that stood between them wasthe air between them. But, there’s morethan just placement separating them. Hispeople have a unique need. They can’tproduce life sustaining energy and require a host to survive. Before there could ever be a true lovebetween them, he’d have to free his people of that need and then free Dee.

First,tell us about the initial idea for this series of shorty’s. How’d the idea cometo you? AND, what gave you the idea for making them shorties…like a televisionseries. *smile*

Well, let me start by thanking you for having me on your blog,Kay Dee. We don’t hang out often enough, being sister authors and bloggers. J

The idea for the Trace series started out as a very vivid dream Ihad one night. The first book, A Trace of Love, is pretty much exactlywhat I saw in my dream: A young woman and young rock star sharing a veryintimate night together. Because it was a dream, I knew there was much moreabout these two strangers than met the eye.

It was Ophelia who stayed with me months after I had the dream.There was something puzzling about her - I mean what woman wouldn’t jump at thechance to seriously date a rock star? But Ophelia pushed Trace away and I hadto know why. Because the feeling stuck with me, I decided to write the dreamdown and turn into a story. Thus the Trace series was born.

As for why I kept each book as a micro short story, well, ATrace of Love was supposed to be my ticket to publication and nothing more.It was supposed to end with that one short story. But Ophelia was beingstubborn and refused to let me give her a happy ending in A Trace of Love.So I decided to continue the story with a couple more shorts. Keeping themshort has its benefits. It takes a much shorter production time, so I can focuson other works, and they’re short enough to read during your lunch break whichI think appeals to a lot of people who like to get that little escape but mightnot have the time to read a 90k novel.

You’reright about some readers enjoying shorter works…I’m one of them. Your works areexactly the perfect length.

Giveus a few details about Book 1, A Trace of Love. What type ofstory is it (genre), and who stars in it?

A Trace of Love is an erotic romance about a troubled young woman named OpheliaMartinez who gets the chance to live out her fantasy romance with her long-timehigh school crush - if only for one night.

Trace Curtis is a hunky rock star and Ophelia’s crush from theirhigh school years. He doesn’t recognize her since it’s been 10 years sincegraduation, but he falls for the mysterious woman who shuts him out aftertaking his heart.

Opheliais a complicated woman ~ issues, secrets, and lonely. What motivates her inTrace of Passion (2^nd shorty in the series)?

Well I’m not sure if anything motivates her at the start of thestory, except to stay away from Trace as much as possible, LOL. Ophelia doesn’twant to let anyone get attached to her because she’s given up on living anddoesn’t want to hurt any more people when she goes. She already has to come toterms with breaking the hearts of her friends. She doesn’t want to add Trace tothat list and tries her best to spare him.

Tellus about Trace Curtis ~ what kind of guy is he? What does he do for a living?

Trace is the lead vocals of a punk rock band called Molten Silk.He’s a total sweetheart as his core, but is used to getting what he wants,being famous and all. And yet, Trace is a little damaged. The loss of hisfather has left him feeling hollow. He doesn’t care for the things he has andfeels as though he himself is disposable, until he’s reacquainted with Ophelia.

Who is Trace to Ophelia andvisa/versa?

Trace is Ophelia’s high school crush. To her, he will always be “Mathew”(his real name - Trace is his stage name), the sad boy who covered up hisemotions with angry song lyrics.

To Trace, Ophelia is the girl who saw him as a human being longbefore he was popular or famous. She makes him feel more like a man and lesslike an object.

Doyou have anything you’d like to add about this series, particularly Traceof Passion?

Oh, there are lots of things I’m leaving out, haha. But I don’twant to spoil the story for the readers. J

What’s next in this little gemof a series? Can you give us a little heads up?

The third and final part of the series is called A Trace ofHope. I plan on giving Trace and Ophelia their happy ending, but it’s notgoing to be easy. All the three of us (the characters and I) are hanging by athread of hope that Ophelia makes it to alter. *wink*

Ophelia rushed into the firststall. Her nose wrinkled. She never understood how other women managed to peeon the rim of the toilet…or the floor for that matter. She was about to try thenext stall when the restroom door opened, followed by a cloud of shouting andthe click of high heels. Ophelia yanked the stall lock home and backed into thecorner between the drippy toilet and the metal frame.

She managed to avoid the House ofBlues for eleven months, twenty-three days, ten hours and forty-five minutes.But fate twisted a knife in her back one week ago when her friends surprisedher with tickets to a Molten Silk concert for her birthday.

They didn’t know. She hadn’t toldanyone. Now she wished she had.

This morning, her mind stooped solow as to consider telling her friends she was ill. But she couldn’t disappointthem. Molten Silk tickets were expensive and the girls had pooled their moneytogether to make sure she had a great birthday.

Once the door swung closed, thetile amplified the click of the woman’s heels as she neared. “Ophelia, are youin here?”

Her breath hitched as she debatedher next move. This isstupid. I can’t hide in the women’s bathroom all night. But shecould try.

“Ophelia?”

She squeezed her eyes shut. “I’min here.” Damn it.

Ophelia glanced at the spacebetween the stall and the floor as a pair of black stilettos came into view.

“The show’s about to start. Areyou all right?”

She sighed and unlocked the stalldoor. It swung open to reveal the tall brunette. “I’m fine,” Ophelia smiled.“Just using the bathroom.”

“Well hurry up,” Alana urged.

Ophelia strolled to the sink andwashed her hands. He won’trecognize me. It’s been almost a year. He probably has a real girlfriend now.Her chest constricted and she winced. How could she still have feelings for himafter all this time?

Alana rolled her eyes. “Ophelia,I love you but if you move any slower I’m going to have to hurt you. Now let’sgo!” She grabbed Ophelia’s hand and flung her out of the restroom into thecrowd chanting “Mol-ten Silk! Mol-ten Silk!”

The venue was packed to the brim,muggy, and smelled like B.O. She wouldn’t have minded expect her friends hadtheir hearts set on standing in the middle of B.O. central. The pair squeezedthrough the crowed until they caught up with the bubbly blonde standing alonein the center.

“Oh good, you found the birthdaygirl,” Lizzy yelled over the demanding horde. She clapped her hands inexcitement. Ophelia managed a small smile.

Alana stretched her neck and glanced around. “Did I miss anything?”

Ophelia looked too, taking noteof the obese gentleman on the left. She could always duck behind him. Shedoubted anyone would notice. Although, with an energetic crowd of roughrock’n’roll fans, ducking of any sort could be suicide.

Lizzy leaned toward Alana andopened her mouth to speak, but the lights dimmed and the crowd erupted incheers. Ophelia winced as her stomach did a flip-flop. She touched her fingersto her lips. I hope I don’tvomit.
Smoke spilled from the stage like a waterfall as the curtain lifted. Fivemale silhouettes stood in the dark. The one on the right strummed his guitar,earning shrill applause from the audience. Lights of every color illuminatedthe stage as the rest of the band joined in the performance. Ophelia’s gaspwent unnoticed as her friends cheered.

Trace Curtis stood center stage,microphone in hand. His voice flowed in harmony with the guitar riffs. Hisblack, unbuttoned vest accentuated his flawless chest and chiseled abs. Hisblack curls were a bit longer than she remembered and hung over his baby-blueeyes. Ophelia’s throat dried and she struggled to swallow. “I’m going to get adrink,” she said to herself. She backed away from her star-struck friends.

Ophelia didn’t breathe until shereached the bar at the very back. Her breath rushed past her lips in a heavysigh as she sat on the worn leather stool and ordered a beer. The bar tenderwinked at her as he handed her selection. Ophelia bit her lip. The old man remembers me after allthis time…

The lyrics stopped. Themicrophone gave a squeal amplified to a glass-shattering pitch. Ophelia cuppedher hands over her ears and turned in her seat without thinking. Everyonestared at Trace. His eyes were so wide, she saw the whites despite the distanceand crowd. Everyone slowly turned to face her. Heat rushed to her cheeks. Shefaced the bar and pressed the neck of the beer bottle to her lips. Just keep singing, Trace. Please, justkeep singing.

Okay JE…we’d love to hear what givesyou inspiration for your writing…do tell…

The Inspiration of Song

Musichas been such a great inspiration for my writing. Certain songs just trigger myimagination and help me develop characters and plotlines. In my Misfits of theLore Series there were two such songs that inspired me to craft these novels – I’ll Be Seeing You and These Arms of Mine.

Lover’s Betrayal, thefirst book in my series, was inspired by the song I’ll Be Seeing You by Billie Holiday. I first heard this song whenI watched The Notebook. Not only didI fall in love with the movie, but I immediately purchased the soundtrack. Thesong that surprisingly stood out the most wasI’ll Be Seeing You. There are two wonderful versions of the song on thesoundtrack, but Billie’s just struck a chord with me. I listened to itrepeatedly. Each time those lyrics sung in her sultry, but despaired voice justmesmerized me. As I listened to those words, I imagined this sad tale of acouple who were forced to separate despite the immeasurable love between them. I heard the pain in Billie’s voice and Icould imagine the pain in my character Olivia’s voice as she said goodbye toher soul mate. The story just came to me in that moment. As I sat down towrite, the words just poured out of me as Billie’s voice sang in the backgroundgiving me the motivation to tell Olivia and Lucian’s story of love, betrayaland forgiveness.

I hada similar experience while I was writing my latest book, We Shall Rise. One of my favorite songs of all time is These Arms of Mine, by Otis Redding. Tome, this is the ultimate love song. It is the pinnacle of a journey wroughtwith highs and lows but in the end leads to a perfect, passionate andinterminable love. That is Kaden and Reysa’s story. Their journey to happinessis filled with obstacles, but as they battle through them, they find the blissthat only true love can bring.

I amso grateful for these two wonderful songs and the inspiration they have givenme. As I continue to write my third novel in the series, Julian’s story, I amfinding inspiration in so many songs. At the moment, Adele is igniting myimagination as I delve through the complicated love triangle that Julian can’tescape.

Pleasetell us why you jumped onto this Beauty & the Beast train? How did the ideacome to you?

Actually, I didn’t have Beauty and the Beast inmind when I started to outline With ThisKiss. The pieces simply cametogether as the hero and heroine began to interact, and I quickly realized itwas the perfect vehicle to move their story forward. It fit on every level: thereclusive, brooding hero, the determined, fearless heroine…

Tell usabout Morgan St. James. What motivates him?

Although the events of his past place Morgan in therole of wicked outcast, that’s not really a role he shoulders easily. He’s hardand cynical enough to play the part, but that’s not truly who he is. Scarredphysically and emotionally, he withdraws into his sheltered estate, away fromthe busy whirl of London society. Julia slowly draws him out of his shell. Althoughhe resists her at first, he slowly comes to recognize the light she breathesinto his dark world.

JuliaPrentisse sounds like a bold little spit-fire ~ what motivates her towardMorgan? Why Morgan?

Actually, Julia fell for Morgan the moment she sawhim at her coming-out ball in London. (Unfortunately, the attraction wasn’tmutual. He doesn’t remember ever meeting her!) In any event, when Juliarealizes she and Morgan can help each other put their lives back on course, shewastes no time contacting ‘The Beast’ with her outrageous proposal.

Pleaseshare anything about this story you’d like ~ maybe a difficult scene orcharacter. Someone or something not cooperating…

A pivotal part of the plot is the hunt for thearsonist who is setting London ablaze. It was difficult to get into his skinwithout making the story too dark. It was important to me that the arsonist bea human character, not just a stereotypical evil villain. I hope I’vesucceeded!

I’lltell you, reading Historical Romance fiction is quite a history lesson in‘love’ at those times ~ so interesting looking back compared to how ‘romance’is handled now a days. What inspired/influenced you to write HistoricalRomance?

I’ve always loved reading historical romance. Infact, I read voraciously, so I suppose that was the inspiration behind wantingto pen a novel of my own. I generally have a germ of an idea at the beginningof a project, then I start researching and it blossoms into a full-lengthplot. Researching provides all thosequirky, rich details that are so essential to make a story come to life.

Whatare you working on now?

I’ve been writing historical romances for years,but I’ve recently branched out into other genres. I’m currently working on ayoung adult project, along with another historical romance set in England. (This historical will have some paranormalelements-new territory for me!)

Do youhave anything you would like to say to readers?

Although I rarely have my heroines take bubblebaths (because the scenes are so clichéd), I am a huge fan of bubble baths, andlove fancy soaps, candles, soft music, etc. Many cases of writer’s block havebeen cured after a long, luxurious soak.

Favoritebooks:

That’s a tough one. When it comes to historicalromance, I love Judith McNaught’s elegant phrasing, Jill Barnett’s sweet humor,Jude Devereaux’s plotting and pacing. But I read outside the genre, as well. There’s a local bookstore where patrons and employees can post littleblurbs about what they’re reading on the bookshelves. It’s fun to peruse thoselittle slips and grab a new book.

A small smile touched her lips. "Is thatgood or bad?"

"What do you want,Julia?"

She couldn't remember him ever using her name before.The sound of it rolling off his tongue sent an unexpected rush of pleasureracing through her. Idly wondering if his reaction would be the same if shespoke his name, she said, "I thought it might be nice if we spent a littletime together, Morgan."

Shesaw something flash in his eyes, but the emotion, whatever it was, vanished tooquickly for her to properly define. "Ah. So that's it." A small,cynical smile curved his lips. His gaze moved over her body with scorchingintensity, as though he were able to see right through to her drawers. Hestraightened and glanced around the empty room, then back at her."Interesting timing."

Heat flooded her cheeks."I didn't mean—"

"Didn't you."

"Certainly not. Mustyou always be so base?"

"You're the one who came to me."

"Withthe simple proposition that we attend Lord Attmark's boating party thisafternoon," she said, seizing upon the sudden inspiration. "That'sall I had in mind."

"Lord Attmark'sboating party?"

"I thought it wouldbe quite diverting."

"Floating along a river that smells likerancid sewage in this sweltering heat. That's what you came to see meabout."

"Yes."

A knowing smile curved his lips. "Liar."

"I don't know what—"

"Liar," he repeated softy.

Before we get started, here’s a bit about Veronica:

VeronicaScott grew up in a house with a library full of books as its heart, and whenshe ran out of things to read, she started writing her own stories. Marriedyoung to her high school sweetheart then widowed, Veronica has two growndaughters, one young grandson and cats.
Veronica'slife has taken many twists and turns, but she always makes time to keep readingand writing. Everything is good source material for the next novel or the oneafter that anyway, right? She's been through earthquakes, tornadoes and neardeath experiences, although nothing is as stressful as meeting a book deadline.Always more stories to tell, new adventures to experience--Veronica's personalmotto is, "Never boring."

KDR ~ Tellus how you came up with the idea for Priestess of the Nile?

VS ~ I’ve always beenfascinated with Ancient Egypt and in the course of my research into variousaspects of Egyptian mythology, I came across Sobek the Crocodile God. His backstory as a god was pretty fascinating. Additionally, I realized he fit ourparanormal genre definition of a shifter,which started me thinking about romantic possibilities.

KDR~Your Egyptian mythology research soundsfascinating.

We’d love to hear a littleinsight on Sobek the Crocodile God ~ he’s immortal and lives around theNile…what else can you tell us?

VS ~ The Ancient Egyptianshad many myths surrounding Sobek and how he created the world out of chaos,what he did for other gods like Isis and Osiris to support their rising to rulethe Egyptian pantheon and he is depicted as being the lover of at leastfour different Egyptian goddesses at one time or another. Action, adventure andromance, all rolled up in one guy – hard to resist as a hero for my story, onceI figured out he was a shifter as wedefine them in paranormal romance.

KDR ~ Oh,yeah, I’m liking Sobek as an irresistible hero, looking forward to reading allabout him. *smile*

Who is Merys and what motivates her?

VS ~ Merys is descendedfrom a long line of priestesses, although her temple is no longer honored bythe local townspeople. She intrigues Sobek at first purely with her beauty andher voice, as well as the fact that she tries to keep his abandoned temple insome kind of acceptable condition. But as he talks to her and visits her, helearns how strong she is, living in her father’s house yet denied a dowry byher stepmother, forced to shoulder a large part of the household burden.

Not a complainer, my heroine does what needs to bedone and finds time for herself as best she can. She has her valid reasons forputting up with her living conditions. Merys teaches Sobek the simple joys of ahuman’s life, touches a place in his heart he never even knew he had. And thenevents threaten to break that immortal heart unless Sobek can figure out a wayto overcome the challenges life throws at them.

KDR ~ CanSobek shift into a crocodile?

VS ~ Yes, Sobek becomes anextremely large crocodile at several points in the action. He can alsopartially shift to half human/half crocodile. The Ancient Egyptians neverdepicted him as fully human – that secret ability to fully shift to human formis known only to me and my readers!

KDR ~ Whatis Sobek’s job as a God? Does he protect humans?

VS ~ Sobek is creditedwith creating the world from chaos but after that grand beginning, his dutiesstarted to revolve more around maintaining the River Nile. The Egyptians alwaysasked him to protect humans from his crocodiles, but I’m not sure howsuccessful their requests were. He can also protect Pharaoh from black magicand sorcery. In my telling of thetale, until he met Merys, he never really dealt with humans much.

KDR~Is this book part of a series? If so, can you tell us about other books in thisseries?

VS ~ I’m working on aconnected series, Tales of the Nile, set in the same time and place, with theEgyptian gods and goddesses taking a part in the action. Sobek and Merys as yetdon’t appear in any of the other books. The next two books are Warrior of theNile and Dancer of the Nile, both of which are in various stages of editing andsubmission. My pharaoh is the anchor character for the series, which can beread in any order. (He’s only mentioned in passing in Priestess.)

KDR ~ Isthere anything else you’d like to add about POTN?

VS ~ Very flattering foran author, I’m getting inquiries about a sequel! So that might happen at somepoint, probably focusing on the son of Sobek and Merys.

KDR ~ Whatare you working on now?

VS ~ Editing the next twonovels, starting the fourth novel, which will be Ghost of the Nile. I alsowrite science fiction romance/adventure and I’m working on a project there –too early to talk about it!

Chapter One

The old abandoned temple remained one of hisfavorite spots along the Nile, overlooking the river from a small bluff, with adeserted beach below. Bek stood gazing across the sparkling water at bronze-and black-spotted crocodiles sunbathing in the final rays of the setting sun. Abreathtaking mix of colors stained the sky as the Goddess Nuit spread her cloakacross the heavens, sprinkling the black velvet with stars.

A beautiful soprano voice rose from the beachbelow the bluff. Bek recognized the words of a familiar old song, given new meaningby the hypnotizing, alluring voice. Imust see this songbird. She’scast some kind of spell over me.

He strolled along the path from the ruins towardthe beach. Taking the last turn on the trail, he walked out on the sand andfound the woman. She waded in the water, casting a small fishing net andretrieving it, every once in a while picking out a wriggling silver fish andthrowing it into a waiting basket on the beach.

Her ample breasts flashed into view when sheleaned over. She had kilted her skirt to her thighs, revealing shapely legs.Long ebony hair was caught behind her ears with combs in the shape ofseashells.

Wouldn’t I like to take those combs out and seeher hair tumble down—she’s as beautiful as her voice. He musthave made some sound. She stopped singing and wheeled, taking an involuntarystep deeper intothe river at the sight of him, a stranger. Her face paled under her tan and hereyes opened wide as she staggered, caught by an eddy of the current.

“Don’t be frightened, please. I mean you noharm.” He held his hands up, palms out, and smiled. “I heard your singing andit drew me here. I only wanted to give my thanks for the concert.”

She laid one hand on her graceful throat, toyingwith an amulet on a thong. “You startled me.” Poised to bolt, the girl appearedwary, probably planning an attempt to run past him.

“I apologize.” He kicked off his sandals andwaded into the water at an angle from her. The net drifted lazily in awhirlpool; he reached out and caught it, lifting the tangled strands from theriver.

“Oh, don’t! You’ll ruin your fine kilt, sir.”She came to him hastily and took the net from his hands. “The river runs muddyat this time of the year. Your servants will labor in vain to get the stainsout.”

He glanced at his waist. Oh yes, I did choose to wear the pleatedwhite kilt of a nobleman. He followed her to the shore as she splashed through tinywaves with her net.“Fortunately, I have no servants to worrywith such things.”

While putting his sandals on, Bek frowned at theNile crocodiles lying deceptively immobile on the opposite bank, then glancedat her. “You take great risks, walking into the river with those beastsnearby.”

One of the animals twitched. Bek glared at it.The creature met his eyes for a second, then settled onto the sand.

“Oh, I’m not afraid. I’m protected.” She wasbusy folding the net and packing it into a compartment in the lid of her fishcreel. She didn’t even spare a moment to consider the predators across thewater.

He coughed to cover his instinctive laugh.“Protected? And exactly how are you warded against attack?”

She stood briskly, raised her chin and tugged anamulet free of her dress to show him. It was a small green stone crocodilehanging on a frayed black leather thong. “My great-grandmother was the lastpriestess of the temple on the bluff above.”

He indicated the amulet. “May I see it?”

The girl unlooped the cord from her neck andhanded the necklace over. “Great-Grandmother told me the amulet was blessed bythe Crocodile God himself and would protect me from his creatures.” Bekchuckled, holding the tiny figurine in his large meaty hand. “Mighty protectionindeed.” He momentarily closed the pendant in his fist, then tossed it to herwith a slight bow.

“Nonetheless, you shouldn’t take such chances.Crocodiles are crafty and fierce.”

When she refastened the amulet the stone pendantfell between her shapely breasts. She unkilted her skirts and the simple dressfell to her ankles. As she bent to lift her basket of fish Bek put his handatop hers on the handle. She gave him a wide-eyed glance but stepped aside tolet him lift her burden.

“Thank you, sir. I’m going to sit in the shadeand eat my dinner now.” She pointed at the nearby grove of palms. “Would youcare to join me?”

“I’m not hungry, but I’ll sit if you don’tobject. An hour of good conversation is a pleasant way to end the day.”

She peeked sideways at him while she walked.Eventually she smiled shyly. “I’m grateful for the company. My name is Merys.”She stood nearly as tall as him, unusual in a woman, but he found it distinctlyattractive. Her face was lovely, oval and browned by the sun, which set off hersparkling black eyes. She was all lush curves and smooth skin—his cock stirredwith lust but he restrained his arousal.

She seems to be an innocent maiden, of good family by her educatedspeech, not a womanto be lightly trifled with for an afternoon. He realized he wasstanding rooted to one spot, lost in admiration of her beauty. Shaking hishead, he started walking again. “Call me Bek.”

“A propitious name for this place, if yournaming was in tribute to the Crocodile God.” Merys slanted a look at himsideways and chuckled. “Are you a merchant? Is your ship anchored somewherenearby?” Not waiting for an answer, she sank bonelessly under the tallest palm.Lifting a shawl that lay draped there across some wicker hampers, she pulledout a hard roll filled with dried meat.

Bek set the stinking fish creel on the sand wellaway from where he planned to sit, but safely in the shade. He lowered himselfinto a cross-legged position and leaned against the tree, hands clasped behindhis neck. “I travel along the Nile quite often, yes.”

She blinked and raised her eyebrows. He hadn’tprecisely answered either of her questions but she didn’t press the matter.“Did you come to see the temple ruins?”

He nodded. Thetruth, as far as it goes.

KDR ~Tell us how the idea for the Masquerade series originated. How did the ideacome to you for Book 2, The Mask?

AW ~ A friend of mine was showing me her gorgeous venetianmask - I took a look at it and imagined my first scene right away :) Adding thechocolate wasn’t too difficult either.

KDR ~Tell us a little about Book 1, The Master. Does it star any of the same characters as The Mask?

AW ~ You’ll find Josh, the vivacious and soon-to-be coowner of Choco Chic Events there, as well Madison, the heroine from The Mastershows up. And let’s not forget Harold, the butler :)

The Master is abouthidden passions supressed due to fear. It’s one of those ‘lost loves returned’type of stories.

KDR ~ For The Mask,(Book 2) who is Eve Manor and what motivates/inspires her in this story?

AW ~ Eve Manor is a pastry chef with a love forchocolate. She has a goal - to make a name for herself. She feels the need toprove to herself, to her grandfather and to the culinary world that she haswhat it takes. That’s her whole focus. Nothing else matters - as much.

Or so she thinks.

KDR ~ What’s the Black &Lace Ball about? Who attends this?

AW ~ The Black & Lace Masquerade Ball is a charityrun fundraiser that celebrates the culinary masterminds and their works of art.It’s a time for the culinary world to let loose and have fun.

KDR ~ Who is Christian Grier?AND, who is he to Eve?

AW ~ Ahh, Christian Grier. He’s yummy. He’s a deep manwith many talents. He’s the Editor-in-Chief for the culinarymagazine. He’s a successful entrepreneur who knows what he wants and how to getit. But he has a secret identity as well. He’s also Kris - part owner of afetish club. I don’t delve too much into Kris’ Dom passions in this story. Thatwasn’t the main focus to Christian and Eve’s story, and I didn’t want theDom/Sub storyline to overshadow everything else.

KDR ~ Who is he to Eve?

AW ~ As Christian - he’s the man she aims to please. Ifshe garners his interest in her desserts, if she can score a featured articlein her magazine - that’s all she needs to claim her success. But as Kris - well... He’s the lover she’s always wanted and craves but is afraid of. She’safraid of giving into her passions with him. They have a bit of historytogether...

KDR ~Is there anything else you’d like to add about the Masquerade series ~ likemaybe upcoming titles and taglines?

AW ~ The Masquerade - Book 3 in the series is in theworks. There is a character in The Mask - Suzanne - that just begged to haveher story told.

I’ve also been askedby readers to tell Josh’s story. If I’ve ever had a character that makes mesmile and shake my head at the same time, it’s this guy.

Kiki: Well, I love readingand writing historical stories which take in Regency England, so I got suckedright into the whole Steampunk genre. So, I got to the point that I wanted tostart writing one myself. Although the “steam” aspect with all the inventions Icouldn’t wait to write or create, with this story I was very intrigued by the“punk” part and all the social unrest of Victorian England too. So I paired thestrict social conventions with the distrust of those thought of as witches aswell. It was a lot of fun to write once the story line ideas all came togetherfor me.

KDR ~ Tellus about Emma, a witch in London…what motivates her?

Kiki: In the beginning ofthe story, Emma,along with her three cousins, make breaking the laws of society her mission.Most of their nights at parties and balls are spent creating amagickal comedy of errors, helping the uptight aristocracy side step theirfastidious standards.

KDR ~ Soundslike there’s room for lots of tension and fun.

There are four witches (Emma isone) who are gifted with Magick ~ are each of their abilities different? Whoare the three other witches…and who are they to Emma?

Kiki: The other witches areEmma’s cousins: Miss Cecilia Ingram, Miss Isabella Hunt and Miss Laurisa Abbott. Theirgifts are not different, and their practices have been passed down through thegenerations.

KDR~How does Emma first meet the vampire of the story? What’s his name?

Kiki: The vampire’s name isJames. They first meet when he shows up at her house unexpectedly on a balconyright outside her bedroom. But, he has been watching her for some time, and shehas felt his presence all along. So, they have a connection before they evenmeet.

KDR ~ Oh my…Jamescomes off as pretty enticing.

What motivates James? Does he hold any magick?

Kiki: Some of whatmotivates him is redemption, but he falls in love with Emma in the process. Hedoes not hold any magick, but he possesses a lot of knowledge about Emma’s.

KDR ~ Do youhave anything you’d like to add about this story or its stars?

Kiki: Just that in asteampunk world, magick can be a lot of fun ;)

KDR~Let’s move to Sacred Sex, A Valentine’s Day short story. How did the idea forthis story come to you?

Kiki: I write a lot ofstories which are Wiccan, based in reality. This one came to me based upon aritual of sex magick. As usual, I get inspired by the spell, and createcharacters and a story in which it could be used.

KDR~Give us some insight on Margaret ~ what’s her motivation through the story?

Kiki: Margaret’s husbandhas been going through some hard times after the loss of his job, and shereally wants to reconnect with him. So, she goes to an aunt who provides herwith all the right tools for a sexual magick ritual.

KDR ~ Man, Icould use an Aunt like that (LOL).

I love the sounds of Aunt Minny. Tell us a little about herand her practice.

Kiki: Aunt Minny is great.She is a free spirit, Wiccan, owns her own shop where she sells crafts onconsignment, but all for those who are aware, potions and spells and candles,everything a witch could need.

KDR~Can you give us a little on the any of the kinky pagan sex rituals? (justchecking *LOL*)

Kiki: What I really likedabout the one used in this book was the amount of time the couple spends alone,naked, just really in each other’s presence, touching, sharing all ofthemselves – reconnecting on all levels. There is so much intense magicalforeplay…hmmm, maybe I’ll stop there *giggles*

KDR~Oh, thanks a lot, Kiki…guess I’ll have to buy it and find out all the kinkystuff myself *grins*

Do you have anything you’d liketo add about this sexy little story or its stars?

Kiki: This story is just soemotional and touching. The character’s situation was inspired by the song “Forthe First Time” by The Script

Go ahead and take it away, Jerri…lookingforward to hearing all about you and your book…

I'm Jerri Drennen, andfor me, writing fits into my life perfectly. I'm one of those people who has noproblem being alone. Maybe because I rarely am. With four children ranging from thirty-one to fourteen, I haven't had alot of opportunity to spend time by myself. A few of years ago, my two oldest were livingon their own, and the other two were in school all day and I found myselfenjoying a little bit of freedom for the first time in thirty plus years. Iloved it. My productivity was on the rise and I was one happy camper.

You know what's coming,right?

Exactly.

My oldest daughter andmy one and only grandbaby moved back in and well, there went my free time. I'vehad to fight everyday to find a moment here and there to write but when youlove something as much as I do writing you're willing to wake up at three inthe morning just to get an hour of uninterrupted writing done. I've been doingthat the past nine months now and I have to say, even with that short amount oftime to create, I've written a number of books. So, if you think you don't have time for thethings you love, you can find it given enough motivation, and for me, mymotivation is creating characters that are memorable for readers. “Whohas a right to know? And what?” Flint asked from the doorway.

Adriana’sgaze flew to him, now leaning against the open door in a pair of cut to fitblue jeans, and a black sweater that clung to every muscle and contour of hischest and shoulders. He looked incredible.

“Leaveit to you to ask about my car before asking how I’m doing.” Adriana snorted,then looked at Billy, her eyes thanking him for not telling Flint the truth.

Flint’seyes sparkled with amusement. “You know how much I love that car.”

Adriana’sstomach tightened. Right. He’d loved her car, but never her.

“Whatdo you want, Flint? Did you come here to see if I’d died so you could have mybaby? If so, I’m sorry to disappoint you. Wait, I thought you were in D.C.”

“Iwas. I flew back when I heard you were in an accident.”

Shefrowned. “Why? I should warn you now that I’m leaving the Porsche to Billy.”

Shegently fingered the huge bump on her forehead. What she wouldn’t give for amirror. She was sure she must look a mess, and with Flint standing just inchesaway, looking like he’d stepped off the cover of GQ, she felt a littleself-conscious.

“Billywouldn’t know the first thing about handling a car like that and you know it.He’d kill himself.” Flint stepped over to the bed and tucked a strand of blondehair behind her ear.

“Thanks.”Billy glared at Flint.

“Hey,just trying to keep you alive.”

Adrianapushed Flint’s hand away. “Right. You’re just itching to get your hands on mycar, but let me tell you this, Flint Morgan, I’m not going anywhere for a longtime. So you needn’t worry about the Porsche.”

“Calmdown. I don’t want your damn car.”

“How’sthe patient?” a handsome, dark-haired man in a white lab coat asked, as he madehis way into the room.

“I’mfine.” Adriana smiled demurely at him. “Can I go home now?”

Hesmiled down at her. “That depends on whether you’re planning to rest or not. Ifyou’re not, then no, if yes, then we’ll see what we can do about getting youdischarged.”

Adriana’sheart skipped at beat. The man definitely had a winning smile, with hisstraight white teeth and deep inset dimples on either side of his mouth.

“Thankyou, Dr–?”

“Terrell.Mike Terrell.”

“Niceto meet you, Mike. So, will you let me go home if I promise to stay in bed?”She batted her lashes at him. “You’re welcome to come over and check on me ifyou’d like.”

Hissmile widened. “Is that an invitation?”

Besideher Flint snorted.

Adrianascowled at him, then returned her attention to the doctor.

“Thatdepends.”

“On,”Mike asked.

“Ifyou’re married or not?” She glanced at Flint and caught him rolling his eyes.

“No,not married, or dating anyone right now.”

“Really?”Adriana’s gaze held the doctor’s for what seemed like minutes. “How nice forme.”

Flintcleared his throat. “Before the two of you go down on each other right here, Igotta go.” He turned and bolted out the door, leaving everyone in the roomlooking dumbstruck.

“What’swith him?” Dr. Terrell asked, obviously confused by Flint’s outburst.

Hello Jamie, and welcome. So,the life of a mystery writer’s dinner conversation is coming up next on theagenda, thanks to Jamie. Honestly, I never thought about it before today.Before Jamie fills us in on the details, here’s a bit about her:

Before Jamie finished her first fulllength novel, she was contracted to write the book, Hiking Iowa for Falconpublishing. In a year, she hiked 75 trails in the state of Iowa and mapped thetrails, landmarks and distances. And this was before GPS. It was tough work forthe measly advance, but it was a writing credit.

So now, Jamie writes the mysteryseries featuring the Gotcha Detective Agency.

Jamie has written three novels, LetUs Prey, the soon to be released Death of a Sales Rep, and Give a Dog a Bone.She is currently writing screenplays. She is co-founder of Scriptchat onTwitter www.scriptchat.com & TWWriterChat www.tvwriterchat.com, and is theformer president of RWA’s screenwriting chapter, Script Scene.

DINNER CONVERSATION

Whether it’s a family function, or dinner with friends, oncesomeone realizes I’m an author who writes mysteries, the conversation alwaysturns to murder. Not just murder, but how to get away with it.

I find this strange, since the bad guys in my novels alwaysget caught. I mean if they get caught, how would I know how to kill someone andget away with it? Oh, but the thing is, I do.

Long before I ever sat at the computer to write my ownprose, I was a reader, and a voracious one at that. My genre of choice wasmysteries, romantic suspense, and thrillers. I was ecstatic when I realizedthere were conferences you could attend and meet mystery authors and learnabout writing. So I promptly booked my ticket and went to a BoucherconConvention.

Knowing, someday I’d write a novel, I attended the workshopsfor writers. One of the workshops I attended had a pharmacist as the guestspeaker. She offered up tidbits I still use in conversations. Like the factthat overdosing on aspirin will only get your stomach pumped, or at the veryleast give you a crappy stomach ache. If you really wanted to kill someone, useTylenol. I won’t go into the specifics, but suffice it to say, that one is inmy bag of tricks for a future novel.

Then there are the things we never think of, like mercury.We put those poisonous sticks of glass in our mouths to check our temperature,before anyone knew any better. Well, mercury is a slow and painful death. Thepharmacist offered up a method of killing with mercury poisoning. Again, nospecifics because I don’t want to be liable for aiding and abetting, thismethod includes one of those old thermometers, a light bulb with a divot, andsomeone who burns the midnight oil. Mercury vapor is also deadly. Just sayin’.

My dinner companions usually have a few ideas of their own,and once in a while I find one creative enough to jot down the details. Oh, thelife of a mystery author.
