Hello everyone, please help me
welcome urban fantasy/paranormal romance author, BR Kingsolver. BR is here over
the weekend sharing an interview about Succubus Rising, Book 3 in her
Telepathic Clans Saga. Before we get started, BR please share a little about
yourself:
I made silver and turquoise jewelry for almost a
decade, ended up in nursing school, then took a master's in business. Along the
way I worked in construction, as a newspaper editor, and somehow found a career
working with computers.
I love the outdoors, especially the Rocky
Mountains. I've skied since high school, with one broken leg and one torn ACL
to show for it. I've hiked and camped all my life. I love to travel, though I
haven't done enough of it. I've seen a lot of Russia and Mexico, not enough of
England. Amsterdam is amazing, and the Romanian Alps are breathtaking. Lake
Tahoe is a favorite, and someday I'd like to see Banff.
I have a very significant other, two cats and two
Basset Hounds. I'm currently living in Baltimore, nine blocks from the harbor,
but still own a home in New Mexico that I see too infrequently.
Okay BR, let’s get started…
Please
tell us how the idea came to you for The
Telepathic Clans Saga. Please include all the fun details.
I read Richelle Meade’s succubus books and loved
them. I thought a main character who was a sexual woman was great. I went on a
binge, reading Nina Harper and Jill Myles. But it bothered me that for a woman
to be wantonly sexual, she had to be a minion of the devil. I started thinking
of other explanations for the succubus myth, and came across the history of
Celtic Goddess worship, the basis for modern Wicca.
I’ve also always been fascinated by the concept of
telepathy and paranormal mental powers. I combined the two ideas and the world
behind my books developed from there.
I
love your combination of beings and abilitiesJ
What
drives, motivates, and/or inspires Brenna and Rebecca?
Both of my main characters were abandoned as
children. They knew they were different, that they could read minds. They were
smarter than most of the people they knew. They developed strength of character
and the will to survive a world they didn’t understand. When they were
discovered by the hidden telepathic society they were born to, they became
fiercely loyal.
What’s
Brenna and Rebecca’s jobs? What do they do for a living?
Brenna went to university to become a scientist and
Rebecca wanted to be a librarian. Brenna ends up inheriting a vast fortune. She
owns businesses and works as a lobbyist in Washington. Rebecca becomes a Protector,
a soldier in the Clan’s army. She is Brenna’s bodyguard.
Give
us some insight into Brenna. What’s a bit of her back story?
Brenna was orphaned and lost to her family when her
parents were killed in a plane crash. She was bounced around foster homes. She
knew she was a telepath, and her parents were telepaths, but didn’t know where
to find her parents’ families. She won scholarships and went to university and
earned a PhD in neuroscience, trying to understand why she was so different
than normal people.
Can
you tell us about the abilities of Brenna and Rebecca? How do they help OR
hinder?
Brenna is the most powerful telepath in history.
She’s still very young and has yet to grow into her power. She also has a bit
of a temper and is often too soft hearted. Brenna is a succubus. This creates a
problem because she drains energy from men when she has sex with them. They
recover, but it doesn’t make for good relationships.
Rebecca is also a strong telepath, but not as
strong as Brenna. She looks to Brenna for leadership, but also knows she needs
to protect her.
Between the two of them, they can do almost
anything. But they’re young and often unsure of themselves. What they most want
is to find love. In both cases, they find it in men who are weaker in power,
but strong in ways that really count.
Why
this location? Anything in particular in real-life that made you select it?
I set my first book in Baltimore, which is where I
live, and in West Virginia, which is the closest place that can still hold a huge
private estate where paranormals could hide from the world. The other major
setting is Washington, which is close to Baltimore and I know it quite well.
The travels the girls take are to places that fit the stories and characters
that fill out the books.
Is
Succubus Rising included in a series?
If so, what series and can you give us titles and a tagline for other books in
this series?
The Telepathic Clans
Saga is the name of the
series. The first book was The Succubus Gift and the second
book was Succubus Unleashed. The fourth book will end this story, though
I will write other books set in this world.
Can
you share anything about the evil / magic /mystery / paranormal or fantasy
beings in the story? What’s unique about them?
Unfortunately, there isn’t anything unique about
them. The world is the one we live in. Telepaths are a hidden society. My
villains are the people, both telepaths and normals, who do evil things to
others. The O’Donnell Clan, which is Brenna and Rebecca’s clan, is opposed by
clans that believe telepaths should subjugate normal humans and rule them. The
other evil characters are those who are kidnapping and trafficking telepathic
girls and women, especially succubi. Unfortunately, such trafficking is a $40
billion dollar business in our real world.
What
are you working on now?
I’m writing a paranormal mystery set in the same
world but with a different main character. A few of the characters from my
previous book make appearances. One of the things I’m trying with this book is
it’s written in first person, whereas my other books are written in third
person.

Succubus Rising
Book 3 of the Telepathic Clans
Saga
BR Kingsolver
Genre: Urban Fantasy/Paranormal
Romance (Adult/New Adult)
Word Count: 87,000
Book
Description:
The Goddess has plans for
Brenna and Rebecca, and the Goddess has a wicked sense of humor.
Rebecca Healy is a true wilder,
growing up with no contact or knowledge of other telepaths. Discovered by a
Clan member on the streets of San Francisco, she felt like she’d hit the
jackpot. Finally, she knew what she was, or at least she thought she did.
When Brenna O’Donnell,
long-lost heir of the O’Donnell Clan, and the strongest telepath in history, is
returned to her family, she and Rebecca form a tight bond. Brenna has it all,
looks, money, power, and men falling all over her.
Rebecca isn’t jealous, but it
would be nice to find someone who would really love her and stick around in the
morning. She’s intrigued by a handsome South American general, but of course,
he has his sights set on Brenna. Carlos de Vargas wants more than love. His
Clan has its back to the wall, and they hope for an alliance with O’Donnell. An
alliance that would lead to war.
The story began in The Succubus
Gift and continued in Succubus Unleashed. In Succubus Rising, questions are
answered and new mysteries are revealed.

Good Morning BR:)
I love how the whole idea came to you...thanks so much for sharing that. It always intrigues me to hear how the ideas for stories or series come to an author...fascinating:)
I switch off between coffee and tea also...mostly by mood, however. I've brewed a pot of Earl Gray Green Tea...care for a cup of that?
I'll be curious to hear about the POV switch up...I love reading both, and there are advantages and a few disadvantages of each. It's a sweet challenge while writing.
With the first POV, I did get around the 'not knowing' what the 'other' main character was thinking by alternating chapters...each having their first person point of view;) (a YA I'm working on as another psuedo)
How did you research the telepathic research of your story-stars? It's a great premise for your series:)
Hi Kay Dee,
First, thank you for the help in promoting my novel. :)
As I read this, I'm sipping a Russian black tea that I'm very fond of. For green tea, I tend to like white teas, especially white peony.
The first POV is a bit challenging, especially since the main character is a telepath. She can know more than a normal in first, but not so much that it destroys the suspense. She's hunting other telepaths, so that muddies things up enough.
As to the research on telepathy, there is a lot of speculation as to what the mind can do, and a lot of fiction has explored that. I try to keep some kind of scientific basis for the telepathic powers and keep them from being pure magic, but of course that's a very blurred line.
I hope your readers will try my books. I think they'll find something out of the ordinary urban fantasy.
BR
