Hello everyone – I’m very excited…because Roxanne Rhoads, a
very good friend, author, editor, and owner of Bewitching Book Tours is the featured
guest author today ;) She has a brand new paranormal romance, Hex
and the Single Witch that just released…and I had the pleasure of
reading (I have a review below). But, for today she’s giving us a taste of what
happens when story-stars grab the pen and wield it as their own.

When
Characters Change the Story

Hex
and the Single Witch is a story that’s been in my head and
scribbled in my notebook since 2007.
I’ve been jotting down notes and ideas for years, then
typing up scenes, deleting scenes, and piecing things together until finally it
all came together as a book this year (and Kay Dee played a special part in the
final product as she was the editor for Hex J).
It was a long road bringing my vision to life. I wanted to
turn Flint, aka Vehicle City, into a place where “Others” walked among humans,
practically out in the open being who and what they are.
And while I wanted the city to play a large role in the
books- I’m a character driven writer (I am also a character driven reader- I
can do without detailed world building and tons of crazy plots and subplots,
but give me angst, dramatic interaction, turmoil and mystery within the
characters and I’m hooked).
I want the characters and their flaws, their quirks, their
needs and motivations to be center stage. And that’s where things got crazy.
Hex
and the Single Witch was originally supposed to have a love
story, not a love triangle, as the romantic element. Mike Malone was supposed
to be a prevalent side character, but never a contender for Anwyn’s heart. Well
he had other ideas because as I wrote the story he became more dominant, more
pushy, and just appeared in scenes. All the sudden he and Anwyn were up close
and personal…and it worked.
And Galen…poor Galen. I think he was very upset about that
turn of events because as Mike worked his way into the story more and more
Galen became a less vicious vampire and more whiny, damaged and angsty then he
was ever supposed to be. Galen was intended to be the epitome of danger and
damage. The poster boy for bad boys with fangs.
The end result for Galen in Hex was damaged bad boy with a
tendency to be confused- and to leave Anwyn confused as well.
From the reviews it seems Galen didn’t wimp out as much as I
thought he did because readers are still rooting for him- or they are still
undecided as to whether they want Anwyn to end up with the vampire (Galen) or
with the human (Mike Malone).
Personally, I have a plan for where the story will end….but
as I have discovered sometimes characters will write their own ending so we’ll
all have to wait and see who ends up with Anwyn’s heart.
NOTE
from Kay Dee: Personally, I’d like to see Anwyn end up with
both of them *grins* I know, Mike, nor Galen would like it, but they both have
such deep feelings for Anwyn…just maybe they’d
make it work. Might be fun:) hint, hint

Vehicle
City Vampires Book One
By
Roxanne Rhoads
Publisher:
Bewitching Books
Genre:
Paranormal Romance / Urban Fantasy
Anwyn Rose is descended from a long line of powerful witches
yet she can barely cast spells young witchlings have mastered. She has one
functioning witch gift, the power of knowing, which she puts to good use as a
Detective on Flint’s Preternatural Investigation Team.
It’s a new era in Vehicle City, supernaturals are running
the town.
The P.I.T has their hands full with paranormal crimes. Top
priority is a serial killer, who appears to be a vampire, draining young women
in the city.
Anwyn is on the case with her sexy partner Detective Mike
Malone. Complicating things is her relationship Galen, a vampire who looks more
guilty than innocent, although Anwyn trusts her instincts even if her power is
on the fritz.
Mysterious spells, compromising situations, and a possible
demon on the loose make it hard to focus on the case, but Anwyn has to make things
right before the human police execute the wrong vampire.
Hex and
the Single Witch contains magick, a little bit of mystery, a lot of
supernatural mayhem, and a sexy love triangle that will leave you wanting more.

Hex
and the Single Witch Book Review
First
Sentence: Vampires strutted their stuff on a runway to Right Said Fred’s “Too Sexy.”
A
favorite line (about the ominous energy in the air): It literally hung in the air like an
invisible fog, clinging to everything, catching spirits and emotions in a net
of negativity.
Review:
Anwyn Rose, a lovely twenty-six year old witch and liaison
for PIT (Preternatural Investigation Team), handles the task of being the
go-between for ‘Others’ (anything other than human) and the humans. Pretty
harsh job when dealing with a serial killer and something seems amuck with her
powers.
Hunky Mike Malone (love the name), Detective for the Flint
Police Department (he’s human), member of the PIT crew, and he also happens to
be Anwyn’s boss. And, yes, he’s too sexy for his clothes, ask Anwyn :)
Enter third guy, Galen, a stunning male specimen of vampire
and one of Anwyn’s all-time crushes. Somehow he’s ended up in the middle of the
human women murders, but Anwyn’s witchy sense points to he’s not involved…or is
her witchy sense gone asunder?
There’s definite sparks flying between the two men and
Anwyn, and honestly, I found it refreshing to have such a strong female story-star
standing up against some true Alphas.
Ms. Rhoads splashed some great humor throughout, along with excellent
high tension, an array of paranormals (vampires, werewolves, witches, ghosts,
fairies, even garden gnomes, and definitely demons…oh my), and Anwyn, the real
star of the show. What a fully charged heroine, complete with a lot of
self-talk, and, I totally enjoyed listening to every bit of it:)
The story takes place not too far from my home stomping
grounds, which added a bit more depth for me. It’s an excellent story to read
any time, but most especially around Halloween;)
It’s a page turner and I can’t wait for Ms. Rhoads’ next
book in the Vehicle City Vampires series.
Kay Dee Royal
Roxanne
– it’s been an excellent day;) Thanks so much for being the featured guest
author…and I loved what you had to say about Mike Malone…I can totally see how
he took over, pushing his way through with those rippling abs…and corded
forearms…and those pecs…OMG…like a steamroller…
GEEZ!
What just happened…see, he even took over me…see how easy it would be for him
to take over an entire story?! *grins*

Good Morning Roxanne...I'm excited about Anwyn, Mike, and Galen getting their story out there...perfect day for it also.
I know its location is pretty much your home city, and it's also where the Fang Fest took place...and a Vampires Ball took place...what's true to life in that festival compared to what happens in the book?
How'd the festival go anyway (real-life)? Success? Lots of vampires show up? How was the book signing?
Thanks for having me here today Kay Dee, sorry I'm a bit late. My to-do list is crazy and I'm trying to get everything done so I can take the kids trick or treating tonight (in the cold dreary rain- Blah).
Yes Fang Fest was fun, the signings were a bit slow but I did sell a couple books and a lot of people seen them so that's the first step. Hopefully it will translate into sales later.
The Vampire Ball was a blast as always...as for fact versus fiction....hmmm perhaps there were a few real vamps masquerading as humans dressing up as vampires LOL
but other than that I don't think the Vampire Ball in my book looked much like the real life one other than being at the same location (The Masonic Temple in downtown Flint)
Let's say the Vampire Ball in Flint better not look like the one in your book *wiggles brows* ou-la-la - if you know what I mean;)
Yes...crazy weather for our little trick or treaters...I'm going to have baby patrol tonight, which is A-okay with me.
Can you tell us a little about Anwyn...what parts of her resonate most with your personality;)
Anwyn has a lot of me thrown in- we both lost our father at a young age and because of that death lost our mother in a way though my mom didn't check out like Anwyn's but she was just different. I guess losing the love of your life can do that to you. I was also very close to my grandma while growing up and she did help raise me.
I think Anwyn and I also share the traits of walking the line of life being neither here nor there so not really fitting into any one category or group.
Of all my characters Anwyn probably has more of my traits than any others though of course there are a lot of differences and fiction tossed in to the mix as well.
This sounds good.
