Hello everyone, Constance
Phillips is joining us today with her new release, Fairyproof, a paranormal
romance full of …yes…romance and spells and magic, too:) I absolutely love your
title. Before we get started on our interview, here’s is a bit about Constance:
Constance Phillips
lives in Ohio with her husband, two ready-to-leave-the-nest children, and four
canine kids. Her perfect fantasy vacation would involve hunting Dracula across
Europe with her daughter, who also digs that kind of stuff. When she's not
writing about fairies, shifters, vamps, and guardian angels, she's working
side-by-side with her husband in their hardwood flooring business.
Constance is actively
involved in her local Romance Writers of America chapter (MVRWA) and the
Southeast Michigan chapter of the United States Pony Club. When not writing or
enjoying the outdoors, she loves reality television or can be found at a Rick
Springfield concert (just look for the pink Converse high tops).
Okay, Constance, I’m dying to
hear all about Fairyproof…so let’s get to the questions:)
Please
tell us how the idea came to you for Fairyproof.
Please include all the fun details.
I was a bit tired
of writing dark books. I was in the mood for something fun and quirky. I also
wanted to attempt a short story that I could take from first draft to revised manuscript
quickly.
The first 20, 000
word version of the story was completely centered on the romance and the
internal conflict. At the end of that draft, I’d fallen in love with the
characters and I knew they had so much more story in them. So, I went back to
the drawing board.
I expanded the
story, the conflict and added a subplot. In that process, it lost some of the
fun and quirky, but it was a lot closer to my true voice.
Give
us some insight into Monique. What’s a bit of her back story?
I love Monique!
As the book opens you see she’s on the run from an over-meddlesome brother, but
as the story gets deeper you realize it’s so much more than that. She’s coming
to terms with the person she is and the life she wants to live and she’s
willing to make some tough choices.
You also see that
even though she’s in a world of hurt herself, she’s willing to reach out and
try to emotionally connect with the hero. She’s selfless in the sense that she
wants to help him over his pain.
Who
is Monique to Daniel? Can you give us a bit about the first time they meet each
other?
To Daniel,
Monique is like a life preserver. He’s been drowning himself in his work to
avoid feeling the pain of break-up that happened a year before.
He sees something
in her right away that makes his heart beat a little faster and his palms
sweat. In those few seconds he knows he’s ready to move forward. He’s just not
quite sure how to take those first steps.
Is
Fairyproof included in a series? If
so, what series and can you give us titles and a tagline for other books in
this series?
It is my hope to
write more stories in the Fairyproof world. I have loose synopsis for three
more, and am in the process of writing one now.
This next story
focuses on Keiran – Monique’s brother. He went through an emotional growth arc
in Fairyproof,
but he still has some growing to do. And he deserves a little romance.
I would also like
to give Leal and Veronica a shot at happiness before I’m done with this world.
Can
you share anything about the Fairies in the story? What’s unique about them?
The fairies in my
books are much closer physically to humans than they are in some other books/worlds,
the major difference being their powers, which are slightly different from each
other and dependent upon their bloodlines.
For example,
Monique and Keiran’s family’s powers are strongest in the area of mind control.
With a spell they can get a human to think or feel the way they want them to,
or compel them to be honest.
The Woodmores –
another prominent family in the book – excel in the ability to heal others.
They are also empathic.
Oh,
the abilities between the families really sound interesting:)
Tell
us about the Fairyproof fairy world? Do they live by a hierarchy or some other
code/laws of their kind? If so, can you give us a few of their rules?
Their society is
patriarchal. They are also very family-oriented. Many generations of the same
family live together.
They are – for
the most part – vegetarians.
Their ruling body
is a six person council, derived from the head of the six oldest fairy
families.
Fascinating
:)
Which
scene was your favorite to write? Can you share a little of it?
I think my
favorite scene in Fairyproof would have to be the scene with Monique and Daniel
in the park, when they find the lost puppy. It’s a break-through scene for them
where they begin to truly open up to each other.
It’s a quiet
scene, leading up to some bigger plot points. And it came to me very fast. From
the short story to the final draft that scene has changed very little.
What
are you working on now?
At the moment I’m
working on a new book in the Fairyproof world centering on Monique’s brother,
Keiran. As I said, earlier, I really felt like Keiran has a little more story
to tell.
Other characters
from Fairyproof
show up, but this book is a journey for him.

Thank you so much for having me on your blog today!
Oh my goodness, Constance, you beat me here:) I'm so glad you're here...I'm thanking you for hanging out with me today.
May I say, your cover absolutely ROCKS! Just like your title...I love it.
Brought you a cup of coffee...and me a cup of Earl Grey...so, you're busy writing book 2 in the Fairyproof series...excellent.
The start of your series...writing a short story that ended up expanding into a novel sounds like how a couple of my books started...it felt so natural to have the characters simply take over and want to share a lot more story:)
You like to write at coffee shops (me, too, but I don't get the opportunity to do so much) about how long do you write a day...or rather what does a week of your writing schedule look like?

Thank you for the coffee! It's just what I needed after the morning I've had so far!
The title to Fairyproof was suggested by a friend, and I thought it was great. Taria Reed did an amazing job on the cover.
Yes. My characters get bossy about their page time sometimes ;-)
Fairyproof sounds like a work of love, so it has to be a great book! Best wishes for many sales! Love the name Keiran, one of my Protectors is named Kieran! (slight difference in spelling)
